What's for lunch?

Okay, I'll admit I'm new at this.
My oldest is going to be leaving the house full-time starting tomorrow for Grade one or 'first grade' for my southern friends. And since this is my first child in the school system, I'd love your thoughts on what you pack for your kids' lunches. What doesn't pack well? What is the balance between healthy food and treats, with the intent that it all gets eaten, rather than just the goodies?
Any advice you have to make this lunch experience for myself and my kiddos as well as sharing your thoughts with each other would be so wonderful.

Happy prepping for school!

Well, I just started doing lunches.
I pack one fruit, one veggie, half a sandwhich. Maybe a pudding or treat but not often. SHe usually eats it all.

This is the lunch my kids get everyday:

Sandwich w/ whole grain bread
Fruit
Yogurt Tube
Water/Drinking box
Granola Bar
Cheese String(sometimes)
Veggie mostly carrot sticks

The junkie thing in there is the granola bar but at least it has oatmeal..lol!
They seem to be satisfied with that.
Hope that helps ;)
How exciting your first one full time!!

Yes, first grade for us Southerners! :)

Let's see, I think each child is different. I learned, quite early, that Abby does NOT want sandwiches. She says they get gross (I guess she means soggy) and pancakeds (I guess she means squished).

My children love fruit, cheese snacks, applesauce or gogurt, I don't buy juice or milkboxes. I instead by the tupperware juice containers. They look just like a plastic juice box. We instead make Peach Tea, Tang, Crystal Lite, or Lemonade. It's MUCH cheaper that way.

My Abby girl likes to take a veggie plate.. which is a mixture of warm veggies I cook in the morning. We place it in her Hello Kitty Food Thermos and they stay warm. She also likes Soup and Spahgettios.

Zach likes PB&J... That's about all I can think of. I freeze the Gogurt that way it stays cold throughout the day.

I just realized your blog wasn't updating on my list--I have been missing your posts! Ugh! We just started this whole school thing too :) She eats at 10:00 in the morning so I have to send a lunch for 10 and then a snack for 1:00--She wants PB&J everyday--so I allow that--it is on that Double Fiber Bread and Sugar Free Jam. She also takes a cup of peaches or oranges, and a box of raisins. For snack--she usually takes a banana and a nutrigrain bar. Sometimes--PB crackers or goldfish. We also do apple wedges and that PB on the go. or Carrot Sticks and Ranch. And Yogurt--- I put ice packs in her lunch bag each day with frozen bottled water--it stays cold all day. That is all I can think of.... :)
