Learning from my kids #358

So my son started school this week. It has been quite an adventure already. My boy is quiet, active, extremely gracious and is so super loving! He has struggled with leaving his momma and the day before school started, I planned a visit for him to meet his teacher, find his locker and show him the bathrooms. Not only did this meeting calm his nerves but helped him look forward to school.

His first recess outside with the whole school was quite a stressful experience for him. As he was playing on the slide, a bigger boy grabbed him from behind and threw my son onto the ground. Hearing this story at the end of the day, I could see tears filling up his eyes. He was terrified and hurt. He did tell his principal who was outside but that was after recess was over and my son didn't know the kid's name. I told him that he doesn't need to be everyone's friend, just be kind and use his words to let others know if they are being mean to him.

This morning as we left for school, he was worried about recess. What if that boy was there? What if the kid was mean again? I told him to just stay with his friends and have fun with his class. That seemed like that was the answer...way to go mom, I'm thinking!

After school, over cookies and milk, I ask him how recess went.

"okay" he says,"I saw that boy again at recess"

"was he mean to you?" asks mother.

"no, but I told him that what he did yesterday wasn't fun for me." and then he continues," he was playing by himself, so I asked him to play with my friends and me."

Have I mentionned that I love this kid!

my heart goes out to the both of you. It's never easy to send your vulnerable child to a big school with bullies.
But way to go mother and son. You guy's both did great. You must be so proud.

What a day! I'm so glad that Ryan made it, and even though it was hard, showed love and kindness. How awesome. Hey, and thanks so much for your prayers.

Okay -- first of all...AMAZING little boy you have there (but we both already knew that!)

Secondly -- I am terrified of that exact thing happening to Joelle; someone being mean to her. I don't want my heart to be broken like that. I'm so scared about Monday...
